The San Antonio Wrestling Club was founded in 1999 by Pat Grogan.  While in Kansas in the 1990's, Pat was instumental in founding wrestling clubs and was active at the state level.  Pat moved his family to San Antonio and was surprised to find that while wrestling was popular in the northern part of Texas, there was no organized wrestling in San Antonio.

Pat got together with Romey Pelleteir, Paul Corner and Gary Steffensmeir to begin the SAWC.  Romey brought world competition experience to the club.  Paul and Gary both were Collegiate All-Americans.  When Pat put together his ten years of club organization skills, the vast experience of his crew and the vacuum of a wrestling outlet in San Antonio; it was "the perfect storm."

The SAWC began as a high school age club focused in Freestyle and Greco Roman.  In it's first year, SAWC developed 3 freestyle and 2 greco roman state champions.  SAWC quickly developed a reputation for winning through its great coaching staff, extensive travel to tournaments and development of state champions.

Over the years, SAWC gradually evolved into a youth club with its primary focus on folkstyle wrestling.  This is the style of wrestling that Texas UIL high schools compete in.  After the folkstyle season is over in the spring, the focus shifts to competeing in freestyle and greco roman.

Pat eventually passed Presidency of the club to Greg Shue.  Victor Gonzalez is current Club President.

The SAWC is dedicated to promoting youth wrestling in San Antonio and surrounding areas.  With over 50 state champions in our history, and a state title in 2010, SAWC has been instrumental in developing wrestlers to compete in both the High School and College ranks.
